This was yet another school project, completed my senior year of high school. It reminded me just how much I love working with clay. If I could work in this medium more often, I would jump at the chance. Unfortunately, that's not terribly economically feasible right now.
Originally we were making oil lamps. That plan changed because our teacher was unable to procure the proper sealant needed for the inside of the pot. Several people chose to smooth over the holes on the lids of their pots, but I decided to keep mine. I guess I'm holding out some hope that I can one day get this sucker sealed and use it as it was intended. I was going to use this pot on my altar, which is part of the reason I put Runes on the inside bottom. Starting on the right and going clockwise, those are the Runes for Defense, Growth, Protection, and Strength (according to Ralph Blum's The Book of Runes). I chose to incorporate the Yin-Yang into my project because that symbol is very important to me. Aside from reminding me of the balance that must be present in all things, it's a symbol of my fiancé and I.
I'm very pleased with this project and had a lot of fun making it. We were using the coil method, as opposed to a pottery wheel, which was enjoyable. Someday I'd love to do much more in this medium.
